What’s the Innovation Challenge?
The Upstate Defense Microelectronics Innovation Challenge is a competitive funding program run by FuzeHub under the Jeff Lawrence Innovation Fund. This initiative supports collaborative projects that drive technological breakthroughs in microelectronics and reinforce the resilience of defense-relevant manufacturing across Upstate New York.
Why It Matters for Upstate Defense
Microelectronics — including tiny components, materials for circuit boards, and advanced manufacturing equipment — are foundational to defense systems and supply chain security. Strengthening this sector locally helps:
- Enhance U.S. defense readiness
- Create high-tech manufacturing jobs in Upstate New York
- Reduce reliance on overseas supply chains
- Catalyze innovation across regional industry and research institutions
Funding Details
Up to three awards of $60,000 each are anticipated.
Funding supports projects that either:
- Innovate new technologies to better serve defense industry needs, or
- Strengthen the microelectronics supply chain in New York State.
Who Can Apply?
To be eligible, applicant teams must include:
- A New York State not-for-profit organization
- At least one New York State small-to-medium manufacturer partner
At least one team member must be located in one of the following counties: Cayuga, Cortland, Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, or Oswego.
Partner manufacturers must have a physical New York presence and fewer than 500 employees worldwide.
How To Apply
Projects can be submitted under one of two tracks:
Innovation Track: Focused on developing technologies that improve defense manufacturing capabilities.
Supply Chain Development Track: Centered on solutions that enhance microelectronics supply chain readiness.
